Guided Hikes & Nature Tours

With your registered Maine Recreational Guide Cody McEwen, of Millinocket, ME.

I offer a variety of adventure options if you’re coming to the Katahdin region for recreating in Baxter State Park, the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and the surrounding trails and waterways throughout the Maine Highlands.

<: All hikes are day hikes ranging from half days 4 to 6 hrs or full days 8 to 12+*hrs. :>

An experienced mountaineer, Wilderness First Responder, and Lifeguard Instructor; you are safe exploring the Maine wilderness by my side. Equipped with the latest Garmin inReach technology, you are secure outside of cell reception. (Typical in the Maine highland terrain such as sub-alpine/alpine zones, unorganized territories, and backcountry regions of the Maine wilderness.) In the event of a head, life, or limb injury outside of urban resources, helicopter response may be provided via local EMS/SAR dispatch** (Weather, terrain, and severity of injury are key factors in an active response via helicopter. Be prepared as additional resources can take hours for help to arrive. Always be ready to hike out in current conditions at all times.)

I am not a recreation outfitter, and you should maintain a general gear and supply list when on any easy or moderate hike, paddle, or tour. A handy list of Standard Precautions can be located here :> Click here for Standard Precautions

Any advanced hike involving mountaineering in the sub-alpine (>3500ft) or alpine zone (>4000ft), or moderate to advanced long distance hikes require a more extensive gear and supply list. A handy list of Advanced Precautions can be located here :> Click here for Advanced Precautions

A spare day use backpack, and spare first aid kit is available for use if you are without one. General water and snacks are provided for transportation to and from trailheads only*** NOTE: You are required to still bring personal food and water in accordance with the Standard or Advanced Precautions gear and supply lists. DO NOT inquire about any trip until you have reviewed the precautions based on your adventure of choice.

* Hikes extending beyond 12 hours are possible on advanced climbs including Knife Edge, extended alpine stay, cross-campground excursions requiring an additional shuttle, or delays caused by unforeseen medical emergencies or assisted descent.

** You will be charged an additional fee if a SAR (Search and Rescue) team, LifeFlight, or Military grade helicopter response is called due to the cause of your injury being negligent = Your injury will be deemed negligent and not an accident if the mechanism of injury is directly related to not following the proper precautions provided for your adventure of choice, purposely navigating off a marked trail, or separating from line of sight or earshot of your guide.

*** Emergency electrolytes and fluids will be on hand, however, your trip will be cancelled and deemed non-refundable if you do not bring enough calories of food / liters of water - and refuse to purchase these necessary supplies if you are without.

Recreation Opportunities

Trip Schedule: Katahdin trips and other Baxter hikes are dependent on park rules. Trips run June 1st through September 30th. April and May pre-season as well as Oct. through Dec. post-season trips are available, but weather dependent.

Katahdin trips are planned well in advance and are based on several factors. Katahdin bookings open March 1st; are typically only available on Saturday’s or Sunday’s; and scarce with only 5 to 10 trips planned for the year. All other trips are widely available. Katahdin dates will be posted in 2024 - inquiries welcome. Evening and night adventures are available as half days, and open upon request typically running from June through August. If you have a desired Maine hike you do not see below, please reach out. Recreation opportunities such as guided paddling and snowshoeing are anticipated soon.

Katahdin Ascent

$400/person (max. 4) - Summit ~ 10 mi. 5267’

$250/person (max. 4) - 1/2 Day^

◇ Group Rate: $150/person will be added on the base rate when booked as a group. (Ex. 3 hikers in a group book a Katahdin Summit: $400 + $150 + $150 = $700)

Katahdin Summit trips are weather dependent, they are subject to mandatory early turn around for the safety of your guide, you, and BSP (Baxter State Park) staff. At least half of trail time will be in direct exposure above treeline (>4000’). DUPRs (Day Use Parking Reservations) are required for parking at the Katahdin trailheads (secured by me), located at three specific campgrounds: Katahdin Stream, Abol, and Roaring Brook. It’s important to understand that regardless of a 1/2 day stint or Summit excursion, the morning of said adventure will begin at 5:00am. All parking reservations expire promptly at 7:05am, and there are no exceptions - the line of unprepared folks patiently waiting for you to not show up with your parking pass, can be 20 to 30 cars long at the Togue Pond BSP gatehouse. Don’t ruin your trip, or have to change your trip plans last minute because of being tardy. That being said, I have plenty of other hikes in store in the event the unfortunate happens.

Via Abol (Abol) - 8.1 mi.
Hamlin Ridge Descent Add on (Crossover - Backcountry)
Combo (Crossover - Special)
Full Cirque ~12 mi. (Extended Alpine Exposure)

Have a desired route in mind not listed above? Let’s chat! These are general recomendations, and if you have been looking at a map going, but, what about? No worries, most of these just have a common Saddle/Chimney Pond Trail descent.

^ 1/2 Day Eligible trips are limited to the following only: (You can double up on two half days, but this does not change the price i.e $500)

Environmental interpretation of land features, biology, geology, history, culture, and human ecology in relation to protected and endangered species are at the forefront of trail discussion on Katahdin, and especially while navigating the fragile tableland - arctic tundra biome unique to the region.
